In 1982, Engin Kaban made his first trip into the world and opened his eyes in İzmir / Turkey. After Bornova Anatolian High School, he graduated from İstanbul Technical University as a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering. He got the travel bug in his first time abroad during university times. Afterwards he participated in several conferences, student activities and camps in various countries as speaker or organizer. He volunteered for non-governmental organizations. He went to Sweden and got his M.A. degree in “Innovation Studies”.
Starting from university days, he did mountaineering. He hitchhiked 12.000+ km. He has been one of the first Turkish backpackers that travelled with interrail. He hosted 70+ travellers from different continents in his home and been guest to 120+ local people around the world. Being the nomadic ambassador and country volunteer for Couchsurfing and Hospitality Club, he took an important role in the development of hospitality networks in the world and in Turkey.
After working in İzmir for 2,5 years in a multinational company as product engineer, he quitted his job to live his dream. He started a vagabonding trip in South America with a one-way-ticket which eventually lasted for 1 year. That brought him to a milestone in his life. Now it was the time to make a decision. Continuing to work as an engineer and live a well-paid, standard and decent life within office hours and fixed holidays; or do something else which gives more freedom, possibilities to travel and live a life that is more spontaneous. That wouldn’t be easy, but definitely sounded more fun.
Eventually, challenge accepted! He headed for the second option and started working freelance. His long-time-dream to become a travel writer came true. His articles together with his photographs have been published in many newspapers and magazines. He won awards in several travel-writing-contests. With his 12+ years of traveling experience, his book The Practical Travel Guide of a Traveler was published in August 2012.
He took it as a mission to improve the traveling culture in Turkey and he is implementing the travel-related projects in his mind step by step. He is one of the three founders of well-known Turkish Backpackers Society. He devotes his time to motivate wanna-be-travelers to hit the road. He is doing presentations to hundreds of people about the life on the road. He is frequently invited as a guest speaker to talk about his experiences live on TV programmes and radio channels. His interviews appear in printed and digital media.
Areas of Interest
While he is traveling, he puts effort to deeply understand the cultures of the places he goes to and tries be a part of the lives over there. Trying local food is a must for him and sometimes the main purpose of his travels. He has interest in world music. He tries to learn the languages of the countries he visits at least to some extent. Apart from English and Turkish, he speaks Spanish and can communicate in German.
He is into sustainability, alternative lifestyles and anything related with ecology. He loves being in nature; hiking and camping. Among the sports he practices are biking, scuba diving and swimming.
Projects For The Future
In 5 continents, he travelled to 51 countries so far (as of February 2014). The more he discovers the world, the more excited he gets for new far away destinations. Lately his focus is on Asia and Africa.
You can meet him somewhere around the world or maybe catch him in his lovely hometown İzmir / Turkey when he is not on the move and working on his projects.
